This leads to Lord Shiva to take Mata Sati’s corpse and roaming in pain. On seeing this, Lord Vishnu cut Mata Sati’s corpse into 52 pieces using his Sudarshan chakra, which formed 52 shakti peeths. It is believed that “Yoni” of Mata Sati fell on the place, where the Kamakhya Temple is situated today. Here are some facts about the Kamakhya Temple • The temple has three chambers: • Western chamber is rectangular shaped and is not open for the devotees. • The middle chamber is square shaped, with an idol of the Goddess. • The middle chamber leads to the holy Garbha Grihya, the most important part is 20 feet under the ground in a small cave, there is no idol but a small “Yoni” shaped kund where one can see water coming out of it. This kund is always covered with red cloth and flowers. • In the month of June, every year, the divinity bleeds and the water of Bhramputra river turns red in color. It is strange until this date that there is no scientific reason of this. • Although the temple is open 365 days a year, except for 3 days (In the month of June on the occasion of Ambubachi Mela). • Temple opens daily from 0800 hrs to 1300 hrs and from 1430 hrs to 1730 hrs • VIP darshan facility is available at the counter. • The dress code is formal as in other Hindu Temples.
